Introduction
Valkyri Ashaqua was born in Queens New York on March 26, 1953. She was the ninth child and third daughter of 15 siblings born to her father a Baptist Minister, and mother,a professional piano artist. Childhood was filled with reading books, drawing and painting, practicing piano and trumpet, singing in church, band rehearsals in school and at home, harvesting grapes and pears in the spacious backyard, and have fun with siblings. Valkyri's mother died of cancer when she was 12 years old, two years after giving birth to her 15th child and ninth son. Valkyri enrolled herself into the High School of Fashion Industries in N.Y.C. in 1968. In her dream school she majored in Fashion Design and Fashion Art. There were sewing machines, mannequins, beautiful fabrics, quiet drawing classes and more. Valkyri scored in the top 20 of her graduating class of 1971 and enrolled in Pratt Institute in Brooklyn New York. During the summer recess of her first year of college, Valkyri took her first trip abroad to West Africa, Ghana. There she was inspired by the many cultural arts and crafts, particularly tie-dyes. After completing her second year at Pratt, Valkyri decided to develop her own craft in tie-dye. With sewing machine and husband, Valkyri traveled and lived in many southern states. Her first son was born in New Orleans in 1978. With baby, sewing machine and husband, Valkyri lived and traveled in countries in Central and South America. Back to New York, her second son was born in1980. Making and selling tie-dyed garments in New York and the Virgin Islands filled the days, the Years and the bank account. Separated and divorced in 1990, New husband and baby girl in 1992, third boy born in 1996. From 1987-1998 Valkyri completed six New York City Marathons of 26.2 miles. A balanced diet and fitness performance are the foundation of her personal contentment. In 2000, Valkyri leaves New York with her eight year old daughter and her four year old son, lives in the U.S. Virgin Islands for a year, then moves on to Puerto Rico where she now resides, combining the services of the Internet with her tie-dye business.
